Happy New Year

So I'm a little late on the New Year's greetings. Punctuality was not one of my resolutions. So far so good on the ones I did make. I decided not to eat sweets during the month of January and I also resolved to work out every day this month.

I've done each of these things before, just never in the same year. I rarely make resolutions, especially the stupid promises to make sweeping life changes that never happen anyway. If someone is dumb enough to ask me what my resolutions are, I usually tell them that I'm going to quit smoking. When the questioner points out that I already don't smoke, I say, "That's true but I thought I'd start with an easy one and go from there."

They usually don't ask me again.

When I do make resolutions, I make them easily quantifiable and of definite duration, though last year the workout-a-day thing lasted more than a week into February before a colonoscopy interrupted things.

(If you've never had a colonoscopy, the thrill isn't the procedure itself. That lasts ten minutes and you're unconscious while it happens. It's the two days of starvation coupled with the intentional overdose of laxitives necessary to "prepare" for the scope that promises the most fun. I actually worked out those two days. But the scope left me feeling miserable for two days afterward and that ended the workout streak.)

I'm not worried if I lose weight. The goal isn't to shed pounds. It's to behave more healthily. If I do that, the weight will take care of itself. I'm not overweight anyway. In fact, I'm not far from really fit. I'm of an age now where this might be my last shot to produce a genuinely beach-ready body before I go over the hill.
